What FotoTrafiX does

Find the core workflow: browse, inspect, describe and prepare for delivery.

Read the transcript

What FotoTrafiX does

Welcome to FotoTrafiX on iPad. This course follows a practical workflow: browse a shoot, select photographs, check their information, and prepare for delivery.

Start with the pictures. Open a photograph to inspect the whole frame. Compare the composition and the moment before deciding which images belong in your selection.

Next, check the IPTC information beside the photograph. Read the caption and credit carefully. Accurate descriptions help the recipient understand the picture and identify its source.

The destinations panel is where delivery choices appear. Later lessons will cover preparing destinations and sending files. This overview shows the panel; no transfer is demonstrated here.

Back in the grid, ratings and color labels help you review a selection. Begin with the iPad lessons, then practice browsing, inspecting, and organizing your own photographs.

Your first session on iPad

Welcome to FotoTrafiX on iPad. We will open a demonstration album, inspect a photograph, and find its caption information.

The Albums section gives you a way back to a prepared selection. Tap FotoTrafiX Demo to open it. This album contains seventy-four photographs and video clips.

Select a photograph, then tap the picture icon for the full view. The whole frame fits on screen, so you can inspect the composition before moving on.

Tap the metadata icon to open the IPTC view. The photograph remains beside its information. Read the existing caption and credit before making any changes.

Return to the grid to compare pictures visually, or use the list to read filenames and file sizes. You now know the basic route from an album to a photograph and its information.

Grid, list and full-size inspection

Compare thumbnails, read filenames and inspect the whole photograph.

Grid, list and full-size inspection

FotoTrafiX gives you different views of the same selection. Start with the grid when you want to compare compositions and find a picture visually.

Switch to the list when filenames and file sizes are more useful than large thumbnails. Changing the view keeps you in the same album.

Select a picture and open the full view. Inspect the complete frame before choosing it. Here, a vertical photograph fits within the available screen.

Use the arrows to compare the next photograph with the previous one. Look at the expression, pose, and framing, then return to the image you prefer.

Return to the grid for the wider selection. Use the grid to browse, the list to check files, and the full view to inspect individual photographs.

Build a shortlist with ratings

Apply star ratings and compare choices in the grid.

Read the transcript

Build a shortlist with ratings

Star ratings help you build a shortlist. In this example, five stars means a first choice, and three stars means an alternate. Choose a consistent convention for your own work.

With the first photograph selected in the IPTC view, tap the fifth star. Check that all five stars are filled before moving to another picture.

Select the neighboring photograph in the filmstrip. Check that the picture and its information have changed, so the next rating goes to the intended file.

Give this alternate three stars. The rating belongs to this photograph; it does not replace the five-star rating on the previous image.

Return to the grid to review both ratings together. You can now distinguish the first choice from the alternate without opening each photograph again.

FTX-08 · iPad · 1:11 · English

Use color labels for workflow status

Keep a workflow label separate from the star rating.

Read the transcript

Use color labels for workflow status

Color labels can describe work status separately from star ratings. For this demonstration, yellow means pending and green means checked.

Open the three-star alternate in the IPTC view and choose yellow. The color changes, while the three-star rating stays in place.

Select the five-star photograph and choose green. This is our checked image. A label is a visual marker; applying it does not send the file.

Return to the alternate and check its yellow label and three stars. Keeping ratings and work status separate makes the selection easier to understand.

In the grid, the green first choice and yellow alternate are visible together. Agree on your label meanings before using them with a team.

Write and verify a caption

Rewrite a caption from supplied facts and reopen the photo to verify it.

Read the transcript

Write and verify a caption

Start with the photograph and its existing caption in the IPTC view. Read the supplied information first, so your rewrite keeps the subject, assignment, location, and dates accurate.

Select the Caption field and replace the rough description with a clear sentence. Here, the caption identifies Heather Tom on the set of The Bold and the Beautiful.

Keep the supplied location and capture date: Sunset Las Palmas Studios, Los Angeles, California, September twenty-second, twenty twenty-six. Retain episode ninety-eight ninety-seven and the separate U.S. air date.

Leave the field, select a neighboring photograph, then return to the edited picture. Check the photograph and filename before reading the caption again. This confirms you are reviewing the intended file.

The rewritten caption is still present after returning. Check spelling, location, capture date, episode, and air date once more. The photographer and credit fields remain beside the caption for a final check.

FTX-11 · iPad · 1:06 · English

Credit, copyright and location

Preserve attribution, add the supplied copyright and check the photo location.

Read the transcript

Check credit, source and location

Check the attribution beside the photograph before editing. Photographer and Credit both contain the supplied Howard Wise attribution. Preserve that wording rather than replacing it with your own name.

The Source field identifies j p i studios dot com. In Copyright, this example enters the exact supplied attribution, including the copyright symbol. Use the wording provided for the photograph.

To inspect information beyond the main fields, tap the magnifying glass in the IPTC panel. The Raw IPTC view opens with the metadata already embedded in the selected photograph.

Filter the raw metadata for photoshop colon City. The matching field shows Los Angeles. Read the stored value and compare it with the caption, so the location information agrees.

Tap Done to return to the main IPTC view. Check Photographer, Credit, Source, and Copyright together. You have checked attribution and inspected the stored city for this photograph.

Add and verify keywords

Add subject, programme and location keywords while preserving existing terms.

Add and verify useful keywords

Keywords describe a photograph with short, useful terms. This image already has the keyword Katie. Keep that existing term while adding the person, assignment, and location shown in the supplied information.

Enter Heather Tom in the keyword field and tap Add. Check that a separate keyword appears beneath the field. The name identifies the person in the photograph.

Next, enter The Bold and the Beautiful and tap Add. Keep the complete show title together as one keyword, so its words retain their meaning.

Add Los Angeles as the location keyword. Review the terms beneath the field and check for duplicates. The existing Katie term remains alongside the three additions.

Leave the field and select another photograph, then return to this image. The four keywords are still present: Katie, Heather Tom, The Bold and the Beautiful, and Los Angeles. Check this saved list before continuing.

Create a shared metadata template

Create and edit a reusable metadata template while leaving picture-specific descriptions empty.

Create a shared metadata template

A template starts with information from a photograph. Open the template menu and choose Save as Template. Here, we name the first version for the episode and subject. Tap Save, then check the new entry in the menu.

Open Manage Templates and select the entry you just saved. Choose Edit to review its contents. Rename it Shared metadata to distinguish this reusable version from the first draft. The editor lets you choose which information belongs in the shared template.

Review the fields that should vary from picture to picture. Clear the person-specific Title and Caption, followed by Special Instructions. The editor explains that empty fields are skipped, so this template can leave each photograph's own description alone.

Keep only the terms shared by this assignment: The Bold and the Beautiful, and Los Angeles. Keep Append to existing selected, so the template's keywords can be added alongside a photograph's existing terms.

Scroll down and review the supplied Byline, Credit, Source, Copyright, and City. These shared values match this assignment. After checking the fields, tap Save and check the renamed template in the list. It is now prepared for reuse.

Edit a shared field on several photos

Begin with the three intended photographs selected in the grid. Check the blue outlines and the selection count before opening the IPTC view. The heading now says Editing three photos, confirming that this is a group edit.

The Caption field shows Mixed because the selected photographs have different descriptions. Leave it untouched. The panel explains that you touch a field to stage a change, and untouched fields stay specific to each photograph.

Scroll down to Copyright. Use the copyright wording supplied with this assignment. Here, we enter that attribution without changing Creator or Credit. The blue marker shows that Copyright is staged for the group.

Review the staged Copyright text and confirm that Apply to three matches the intended selection. Tap Apply to three. The confirmation reports that it was applied to three photos. Other fields have not been staged.

Open the first photograph on its own to inspect the result. The original caption, five-star rating, and green label are still present. Copyright now shows the supplied attribution. Repeat this check on your other edited files.

Filter an album by rating, color and file type

The filter panel narrows the pictures shown in the grid. Start with all seventy-four items visible, then open the panel to see separate choices for rating, color and file type.

Set Rating to five stars while leaving All Files and Any Color selected. Close the panel to inspect the result. The grid contains one photograph with its existing five-star rating.

Reopen the panel, set Rating back to Any, then choose Yellow. Close the panel to see the single result: the three-star photograph with the yellow label. The rating criterion is now unrestricted.

Reopen the panel and reset Color to Any Color. Choose Videos under Type, then close the panel. Five clips now remain. With rating and color unrestricted, this result is controlled by file type.

Reopen the panel and set Type back to All Files, then close it. All seventy-four items return. The existing five-star green photograph and three-star yellow alternate are still marked the same way. Filters change the view.

Crop a photo and save a separate copy

Check the original photograph and its filename before editing. Open the crop tool to work on the framing. In this example, we will save the result as a separate copy.

Choose the four-by-five aspect ratio. The crop rectangle now keeps that proportion as you adjust it. Review what the frame includes before you change its size or position.

With the ratio fixed, drag a corner handle to adjust the crop area. Then reposition the crop around the subject. Check the edges and the framing before you save this version.

Choose Save As to make a separate copy. Keep the suggested filename ending in underscore edit, then tap Save. This creates an edited file alongside the original.

Inspect the separate underscore edit file and its smaller pixel dimensions. Then reopen the original photograph. Its original filename and full dimensions are still present. Keep both files until you have checked the result.

Adjust exposure and shadows, then compare

Open the adjustments tool for the next original photograph. The controls appear beside the image. In this example, we will make small changes to exposure and shadows.

Raise Exposure to plus zero point two E V. Watch the photograph as the control changes. Use a small adjustment and inspect the subject and bright areas before moving on.

Raise Shadows to zero point one four. This changes the darker parts of the image. Keep the exposure adjustment in place, then inspect the combined result before comparing it with the original.

Use the comparison button to view Original. Then switch back to Edited. Compare the subject and the darker areas in both views. The controls retain your exposure and shadow settings while you compare the previews.

Choose Save As and keep the suggested underscore edit filename. Tap Save to create the adjusted copy. Check the new filename and pixel dimensions when it opens. This version keeps the same image dimensions as the original.
